Thirty-two years ago, the Carl B. Fenton American Legion Post #20 in Dallas, spearheaded by members, nick Nichols and Floyd Hubbard,

Wanted to honor the men and women who served our country, and those who served our country and have since passed on. The Avenue of Flags was organized at the Dallas Cemetery.

The original Avenue of Flags took place on May 27th 1991. Senator Mark Hatfield was the featured speaker, and the Dallas National Guard provided the Rifle Salute.

Sixty-five Flags were placed in honor of “Our Fallen Warriors” for the initial ceremony. Each Flag was dedicated to a Veteran who had a Flag purchased by their family and each year, the number of Flags placed has increased as more Veterans are recognized by their family. Family and friends look forward to the Avenue of Flags every year. People come to the Dallas Cemetery and drive through the Avenue looking for their Fallen Warriors name plate and Flag.

The Avenue of Flags has expanded each year, and the members for the American Legion have worked hard to maintain the Flags, pole, and the holes that need yearly maintenance, as will as ones that are required for the new Flags that are placed yearly.

On Memorial Day, May 29th 2023, we recognized 819 “Fallen Warriors!” Thirty new Flags were placed for this year. The display of Flags becomes more impressive with each passing year. It is truly an awe-inspiring vision for those who visit the Dallas Cemetery during Memorial Day Weekend. The Avenue of Flag ceremony has become a source of pride for our community of Veterans and their families as each year they remember their loved ones who served their country proudly.
